Koh Mak is a mid-size,
16sqm kilometre, island located approximately 20 kilometres south of Koh
Chang. This quiet island is home to several hundred locals and
almost 20 small mid-range bungalow resorts catering mainly to families
and couples who are looking for a real island getaway.
There are no beer
bars, nightclubs or streets lined with souvenir shacks on Koh Mak.
Also, unlike Koh Chang, Koh Mak is relatively flat and bicycle or
scooter are the preferred means of transport.
The island is 90% owned by members of one family, whose ancestors were
given the island by the King of Thailand several generations ago. Many
of the resorts are owned by members of this family.
The beaches on the
northwest 'Suan Yai' & southwest 'Sai Khao' of the island are long palm
fringed swathes of fine white sand bordering the crystal clear sea.
These are good as, if not better, than any of Koh Chang's beaches.
Mountain biking through the rubber plantations and along trails on the
east of the island is also a popular pastime.
Daily ferry services
run to the island from the mainland throughout the year and several
times daily
from Koh Chang during the tourist season, October - June. A
new high year round, speed catamaran service is scheduled to enter into operation
in March 2008.
The island has 24
hour electricity but, as on Koh Chang, water supplies come from private
wells.
Western TV & Internet
